Pretty good win for the Pistons, as the Pistons had another career night, this time from Marcus Morris. Just a good win, and the Pistons are doing what they need to do to start off this stretch. If they are going to turn it around, now is the time.
Not a great game for Jackson and he got hurt at the end of the game, I don’t think that there has been any news as to how badly he is hurt or not. That said, I do think he had a decent game and played the right way, he just couldn’t get his shots to fall. His 10 points on 14 equivalents is not good, but he countered it with 8 assists and no turnovers, and for the most part his shots were ones that I am totally fine with him taking, he just missed them. But as far as I’m concerned, I am generally most concerned with him turning the ball over, as that has often been his biggest problem, and he avoided that tonight. So not a great game, but it was pretty good, and it would be good if he can play like this more often. He had a 2nd place for the game +10 on the night as well.
After a career night, KCP came down, hard. 2 points on 7 shots is quite a fall off. But he did have 5 assists with just one turnover, a steal, and a block. Even though he did not play a particularly good defensive game as his main cover, Lavine, had little trouble scoring until he got hurt, KCP did have several nice plays including a huge block on Wiggins. This game was a good example of KCP’s growth offensively, because even though his shot cooled off, he has improved as a passer and off ball player that he was not a total negative on offense and he didn’t just force a bunch of shots to shoot the Pistons out of the game. So even though he did come down and not play a very good game, he didn’t play a bad one, and as long as he can avoid the really bad games on his off nights it is a huge improvement for him.
THE GREATEST MORRIS:
36 points on 24 equivalents, 6 rebounds, a pair of assists, and a steal. Marcus went 5 of 9 from deep and hit a bunch of tough isolation shots, including one absurd one down the stretch over 2 defenders. There are nights where he can look like a star, and he held Andrew Wiggins almost totally in check on one end, and gave him the business on the other. Morris hit big shot after big shot to give the Pistons the lead and to keep them there. Just a huge game for Marcus, and important that he had it given that Reggie and KCP forgot how to shoot for a night.
Leuer joined Marcus in putting up a career high in points with 24 on 18 equivalents. Although somehow it didn’t feel like he scored that many at the time. Either way, he played a very nice game and hit his 3s (4-7 from deep) to have a nice efficient night. He played pretty decent defense to boot as well, to make it a nice game for Leuer. I also believe that I am totally confident in his ability to take little guys one on one.
Andre had a bit of a rough night putting the ball in the hoop, finishing with 12 points on 14 shots, although several of those were tip attempts so it wasn’t as bad as it looks. HOWEVA, he did finish with 18 boards, 2 steals, and 3 blocks, so even though he didn’t have a great night scoring the ball, he had a very good one in all other areas. The Wolves just don’t really have any big who is strong enough to deal with him. Also worth noting, that this game was a situation where I was totally cool with SVG taking Andre out when they started to foul. At that point it is a Hail Mary by the other team and by taking him out you eliminate it.
Only played 23 minutes as SVG rode the starting forwards hard, but he had 14 points on 13 equivalents. He got a couple of nice buckets and was certainly impactful when he was on the floor. He also went 2-4 from deep which was nice. He just didn’t play enough to have much more of an impact.
Ish’s shot has continued to stay wet as he scored 10 points on 8 shots, although when he came in for Reggie late in the game after Reggie was hurt he did force a couple of layups that missed quite badly. He also had 5 assists against 2 turnovers passing the ball. One thing to note, is that given how much hubbub was made over Ish’s +/- last game, is that I really think that Ish outplayed Reggie tonight, and yet Reggie had a +10 and Ish had a -4. You just don’t want to put too much on the +/- for a single game.
Baynes had another pretty nice game, with 8 points on 8 equivalents and 6 boards. Other than one possession where he missed a couple of bunnies off of rebounds he didn’t do any of the stupid crap that he often does. Other than that he had a nice game finishing looks on offense and playing hard on defense.
Couldn’t get the ball in the hoop going 0-2 from the field and also had a couple of turnovers with 2 assists, but he still did his thing on defense and generally playing hard. His shot is likely going to come and go but as long as his defense stays I’m not going to complain too much. One thing that is worth noting is that I think that he is officially gun shy when driving to the hoop, especially on the fast break. And unless he starts to actually finish some layups teams are going to start ignoring him.
Good game, it is a little bit worrying that they needed such a huge game from Morris in order to win, but Wiggins having trouble with Morris is not a huge surprise. Pistons need to win some games now, and they are 2/2 on the current stretch. So hopefully they keep it up and Reggie isn’t hurt too bad.
What do you think? How about Morris? Should Stanley be more aggressive at the hoop?
