Game Recap/Notes: Game #47. Pistons 106 - Cavs 114. 25 - 22.

Huh. I don’t know for sure what to make of that game. On one hand, the Pistons got pretty well destroyed. But on the other hand, the Pistons did not play all that poorly, the Cavs were just that good. Like, it just sort of had this feeling of the Cavs were in fully turnt mode and they are just a lot better than the Pistons. (Although the Pistons were not totally on top of their game FWIW. Just every other time the Pistons have gotten handled like this they clearly just played crappy.)

Box score.

'

Reggie Jackson: Was the guy for the Pistons who was most off his game tonight. Just 15 points on 17 equivalents, and 6 assists to 3 turnovers. He turned in a 3rd straight game of solid defense which was very good to see, but he just was having trouble reading the defenses that the Cavs threw at him. It was not some horrible performance by any stretch, but he is the 2nd best player on the team and he needs to be better than this if the Pistons want to win.

'

KCP: Really solid night for KCP. 19 points on 16 equivalents, 2 assists, and even 7 boards. His defense on Irving was not quite as successful as I would have thought, but Irving’s really good night was not all on KCP. And despite that KCP made a lot of really good defensive plays, including a awesome destruction of LeBron when Bron thought that he had an open 3. That was super cool. He got some solid offense in, and also still had it in him to put in the solid night on defense. Good night.

'

Greater Morris: Really solid night for Marcus as well. While LeBron’s not so dominant night offensively had more to do with LeBron being kind of passive than Marcus playing really good defense, but he did play pretty solid defense. Morris also had a really solid night on offense with 14 points on 12 equivalents, and it just sort of seemed like his effort and energy played a big role in the Pistons trying to make it a game down the stretch, which has become a real pattern with him. When the Pistons are getting smoked, Marcus steps up and just puts it into high gear because he is a bad dude like that.

'

Ersan Ilyasova: 11 points on 11 equivalents, which is a totally fine state line for Ersan. But he was largely culpable in Kevin Love’s big night. He lost him on screens with regularity and just generally did not do a good job of tracking him which resulted in Love have a nice stretch of easy looks. Not too bad a night for Ersan but it was totally fine.

'

Andre Drummond: Decent night for Andre, 20 points on 18 equivalents, although just 8 boards. The Cavs are a monster rebounding team and are especially effective at cleaning the defensive glass so that should not come as a huge surprise, but the attention paid to Andre allowed for a few more offensive boards for the rest of the crew. His defense was really solid, and he largely controlled the paint with 3 blocks. But unfortunately the Cavs were having so much success from the perimeter that it did not really matter all that much.

'

Stanley Johnson: Awesome game for Stanley, he has really put in a solid stretch of basketball. I don’t know for sure if he will be able to keep it up for too long but he might. 15 points on 11 equivalents is really solid, and toss in 5 assists and you have an awesome night coming off the bench for Stanley Johnson. ALSO, it has to be said, he played some killer defense on LeBron when he got the opportunity. LeBron tried to body him up and Stanley did not give an inch. That was the coolest thing to see of the night. Also, when he gets out in the open floor and runs, he looks damn near LeBron like, just seeing a guy that big, strong, and athletic running in the open court. (I am not saying he is as good as LeBron by any stretch lol.)

'

Anthony Tolliver: 8 points on 6 equivalents, 2 of 5 from 3, and played a bit better defense on Kevin Love than Ersan did. Solid night if nothing all that notable for Tolly.

'

Brandon Jennings: I’m starting to not be so sure exactly what to make of Jennings play. He put up another zero in scoring, and also only had 2 assists. Part of that has to be Stanley Johnson’s solid play as of late which makes Jennings’ play making less required, but despite the not very good numbers, the bench mob just clearly plays a lot better when he is out there.

'

Aron Baynes: A bit of coming back down to earth for Aron Baynes after a stretch of awesome play. 4 points on 2 shots, 5 boards. Although he fouled like a mofo which was not so good. Still a totally fine night for a backup center, fine night for Baynes.

'

General: Like I said at the start, it was a weird game. The Pistons had some issues, but I think it was mostly that the Cavs were just on top of their game, and when they are on top of their game they are really freaking good. The Pistons are not really freaking good, not yet at least. I actually thought that Andre had better numbers than he did, same as Morris. They both seemed to be the biggest parts of the Pistons fighting back to make it at least a little bit interesting late in the game.

What do you think? Will Stanley Johnson keep up this play? Let me know! We All get smarter!
